One Man Against the World: The Tragedy of Richard Nixon Audible – Unabridged ridged
Author: Tim Weiner ID: B00ZIZWOL0

A shocking and riveting look at one of the most dramatic and disastrous presidencies in US history, from Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner Tim Weiner Based largely on documents declassified in only the last few years, One Man Against the World paints a devastating portrait of a tortured yet brilliant man who led the country largely according to a deep-seated insecurity and distrust of not only his cabinet and Congress but the American population at large. In riveting, tick-tock prose, Weiner illuminates how the Vietnam War and the Watergate controversy that brought about Nixon’s demise were inextricably linked. From the hail of garbage and curses that awaited Nixon upon his arrival at the White House, when he became the president of a nation as deeply divided as it had been since the end of the Civil War, to the unprecedented action Nixon took against American citizens, whom he considered as traitorous as the army of North Vietnam, to the infamous break-in and the tapes that bear remarkable record of the most intimate and damning conversations between the president and his confidantes, Weiner narrates the history of Nixon’s anguished presidency in fascinating and fresh detail. A crucial new look at the greatest political suicide in history, One Man Against the World leaves us with new insight not only into this tumultuous period but also into the motivations and demons of an American president who saw enemies everywhere and, thinking the world was against him, undermined the foundations of the country he had hoped to lead.

Today, twenty-one years after his death, Richard Nixon is still a polarizing figure. People either think he was a great man undone by inept subordinates that he was too loyal to, or they think that he was the most evil Machiavellian political figure of the 20th century. Right from the beginning of One Man Against the World: The Tragedy of Richard Nixon, author Tim Weiner makes no secret of which camp he falls in. Weiner defends his strong contempt for the 37th President of the United States, making the argument that Nixon tried to place himself above the law, much like a king, rather than the leader of a nation of laws. He goes farther however in suggesting that Nixon not only saw himself as above the law, but that he was also a drunk, paranoid and (despite Nixon’s vocal denial of this) a crook.

The problem for those seeking to defend Nixon from these assertions is that, as Weiner points out, many of these claims are supported by statements that come from Nixon’s own mouth. Weiner quotes from the recently released Nixon tapes to show that his subject was often petty, vindictive and branded every critic as his mortal enemy. He also relies heavily on an oral history of the State Department, as well as memoirs from some of the contemporary players, and here he is perhaps more slanted in his selection of sources unfriendly to Nixon.

There are some new revelations in the book, or if not new, then at least subjects not often discussed about Nixon. For example, Weiner relies on quotations from recordings to show that Nixon and his staff were aware that the FBI’s Mark Felt was the person passing leaked information to the Washington Post (Woodward and Bernstein’s "Deep Throat").

The subtitle of BOBBI BROWN MAKEUP MANUAL indicates it is for the beginner to pro and I’m in the beginner category. All I’m interested in is doing my own makeup well. As a user of Bobbi Brown makeup for over ten years, I wanted to read this book to see what I could improve as formerly I was just applying the makeup as instructed by the BB counter saleswoman instructed me. I didn’t know why I was doing what I was doing until I read this book.

The bulk of the book (the first 138 pages) is designed to be used by both individual women for their own makeup and can also be used by professionals. After giving some brief opinions and recommendations on which products or product types to use on various skin types or for different purposes (such as when to use crème blush versus powder blush for example), clear directions for applying the makeup properly are given in brief text along with full step by step directions. Important to note is that all skin colors and different ethnicities are included. Special techniques for Asians are given such as handling eye makeup. I was happily surprised to see special advice given for women with freckles, the advice is to not cover them up completely but to use special makeup effects that allow them to show through. Also covered is how to handle makeup with skin conditions such as rosacea and others.

A section at the beginning gives information about brush selection, the importance of proper brush maintenance, and the reasons to use high quality brushes. Advice on compiling makeup kits is included, specifically, what items to buy and how to organize them for different purposes (travel, everyday use, and so forth).

I was impressed also with the section about eyebrows and eyelashes.
I bought this book hoping for more but Bobbi Brown did not deliver.

PROS:
-This book has beautiful product photographs
-Ms. Brown’s blush application technique produces WONDERFUL results
-Lovely models of all colors showcase the diverse range of what beauty really is
-Concealer/corrector application technique also is great
-Final section for would-be makeup artists is insightful and well put together

CONS:
-All of the sections are unfortunately short: Biggest problem really. For example, her foundation application was not helpful. She provides "step photos" with captions but they could really be more helpful. She could have went into detail at each step. All women would love to know how she gets those photo ready results on the models.
-Her eyeshadow techniques are a joke. Ms. Brown suggests using a "base eyeshadow" before applying your real makeup look. In reality, a good primer on the lids that dries translucently is a much better choice, not an extra shadow that will undoubtedly change the rest of the colors.
-She doesn’t provide any names of the products photographed, which I thought was a real letdown. There were a lot of beautiful colors that I wanted to know MORE about!
-Some of her skincare tips are suspect. For example, she suggests that those with oily skin don’t really need moisturizer after the face is washed. Not having a properly moisturized face will only make skin more oily. Believe me, I know!

Bobbi Brown’s "Makeup Manual" really was not a very good manual at all. She proved that she really is much better at face and cheeks than eyes and creativity. She stated within that she wished that she had a book like her own when she was starting out. I ask, why?

For many disease processes, there is only a surgical solution. For generations of medical students, residents, fellows, and attending surgeons, "Schwartz’s Principles of Surgery" has provided the definitive explanation and analysis of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of surgical disorders. It has always been an absolutely brilliant and comprehensive textbook, and "Schwartz’s Principles of Surgery, Tenth Edition" certainly continues this proud tradition. It is an exceedingly well-written, well-illustrated, and well-referenced textbook of Surgery, whose scholarly authors are all renowned experts in their specific areas of surgical endeavor. It certainly belongs in the personal medical library of every practicing physician, irrespective of their individual specialty. "Schwartz’s Principles of Surgery, Tenth Edition" remains the consummate textbook of Surgery, and I give it my very highest recommendation.

The master textbook. Unavoidable for any surgery resident. Information is good, although I can’t compare with previous editions. The only downside is a large number of typographical and grammatical or spelling errors, which are unexpected in a book of this quality.
Also, I have the Kindle edition which works worst on my Kindle fire, because it is all in greyscale and the tables are difficult to read. Works well on other Kindle platforms such as my PC and phone.

It’s an excellent book. Not only for students. I have the anterior edition for control. It’s really new!. Most of the items are up to date. Collia.

QBQ! The Question Behind the Question

QBQ! The Question Behind the Question: What to Really Ask Yourself to Eliminate Blame Audible – Unabridged ridged
Author: John G. Miller ID: B0006IU6IC

The lack of personal accountability is a problem that has resulted in an epidemic of blame, complaining, and procrastination. No organization or individual can achieve goals, compete in the marketplace, fulfill a vision, or develop people and teams without personal accountability. John G. Miller believes that the troubles that plague organizations cannot be solved by pointing fingers and blaming others. Rather, the real solutions are found when each of us recognizes the power of personal accountability. In QBQ! The Question Behind the Question, Miller explains how negative, inappropriate questions like “why do we have to go through all this change?” and “who dropped the ball?” represent a lack of personal accountability. Conversely, when we ask better questions, QBQs, such as “what can I do to contribute?” or “how can I help solve the problem?” our lives and our organizations are transformed. This remarkable and timely audiobook gives a practical method for putting personal accountability into daily action, with astonishing results: Problems are solved, internal barriers come down, service improves, teamwork grows, and people adapt to change more quickly. It is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to learn, grow, and change. Using this tool, each of us can add tremendous worth to our organizations and to our lives by eliminating blame, complaining, and procrastination.

In The Question Behind the Question: Practicing Personal Accountability in Business and in Life, John G. Miller presents an alternative way to look at our problems (or challenges) and encourages us to ask different, but better questions about them.
Miller starts off by illustrating incorrect questions (IQ’s). IQ’s focus on things or people outside or external to us. Some examples might be "When will he learn to manage better?", "Why can’t they see my point-of-view?", "Why can’t they hire better workers?". IQ’s tend to sap our energy and deflate our spirit.
IQ’s do, however, seem to come naturally, perhaps as a result of human nature. Miller often asks groups of people what’s the one thing they would like to change in their organizations. The answers always follow the external P’s: that is, change the policies, procedures, prices, and other people. "Nobody ever says me." As an example, look at the following questions and see what is the first response that comes to mind.
-A poor subordinate blames the _____.
-A poor executive blames the _____.
-A poor driver blames the _____.
Although these thoughts or questions may be natural, they lead us into blame, complaining, and procrastination. Miller’s solution is to discipline our thoughts and to look behind our initial questions to come up with better questions-or, as he terms it, the question behind the question (QBQ).
These are Miller’s three guiding principles for better questions or QBQ’s. Better questions:
1. "Begin with what or how (not why, when or who)."
2. "Contain I (not they, we, or you)."
3. "Focus on action."
A perfect example of a QBQ is "What can I do right now?

Frantz Fanon was a black man born in the French colony and island of Martinique. He trained as a doctor specialising in psychiatry. He was deeply concerned about the impact of colonialism on the people of colour, particularly how it humiliated them, destroyed their culture, values and dignity. This led him to get involved in the Algerian war of independence in the 1950s.

The book "Black Skin, White Masks" was written almost fifty years ago. This was during the time when decolonisation of the African continent and elsewhere was gathering momentum.

To adequately capture and assimilate Fanon’s thinking of the question of colonialism and racism and their impact on the coloured people, one also needs to read Fanon’s other great works: "The Wretched of the Earth" and "Dying Colonialism". Here one can see his anger and the background to his conclusion that it was only through violence that people of colour could liberate themselves from colonialism, particularly from mental bondage and inferiority complex that accompanied colonial subjugation.

In "Black Skin, White Masks", Fanon develops his thesis about the impact of inferiority complex of subjugated peoples and the alienation of some of them from their kind resulting in their wish to identified with the colonialists or imitate the European. There are a number of celebrated and classic cases of coloured people who have tried various formulas to change the colour of their skins, the tone of their voices or their names so that they sound more civilised (European).

Fanon’s ideas about how the coloured people can liberate themselves (physically and mentally) influenced many leaders of revolutionary movements that were fighting colonialism.
This book has provided me with a tremendous sense, not only as a black person, but an educated minority having difficulty managing the world of white and black. The more I’ve progressed academically and professionally, the more I felt marginalized by both peoples, particular by other blacks. After a recent haranguing experience with a former co-worker, I decided I had enough and began reading on what it means to be black to be refute such nonsense. And this book provided in ways I could not have possibly expected.

The first aspect of critical importance was, what I felt Fanon’s exploration of the psychology of being black, both male and female. Males pathologic plight lies in his desire to self-actualize and be seen as a man while women’s plight derives from the need to be financial secure and to have assurance that her offspring will be not only taken cared of but in a socio-economic position higher than hers. Because of which, have incentives to go "white." Fanon indentifies the problem to be an economic issue at its root, and the epidermalization of inferiority at its core. The black intellectual is a special case, alienated by his fellow men adopted the vernacular and behavior of whites only to further push him from his people. Worse is the consciousness that the other culture (whites) did not fully accept you as their own, for the simple reason that you were "of a different kind." This was an ugly pathologic death spiral that would lead first to him hating all other blacks then me hating his self. On all account, this describes my very own psychology, and the general tone of so many blacks I’ve come across.
